EADS partners Erudine
Global defence and aerospace group EADS has made this announcement:
EADS Defence & Security Systems has announced that it has purchased a minority stake in the Erudine IT software company. The deal gives EADS, global leader in space and defence services, exclusive use of the Erudine Behaviour Engine software across the aerospace, global defence, and global security sectors.
The first software to capture and implement in real-time a user’s tacit knowledge, the Erudine Behaviour Engine will enable EADS to deliver new, highly complex security systems at dramatically increased speeds. Previously, developing the logic of systems capable of handling huge amounts of complex data from many sources has taken years whereas the new Behaviour Engine allows more reliable delivery in just months. Developers can clone the logic of 'legacy IT systems' and automatically highlight areas where logic conflicts exist in a format that the end user can understand.
Applicable across many critical areas of security - border surveillance/control, protection of sites and infrastructure, protection of transportation infrastructure and public safety at large events - an automated mind mapping model frees up developers to focus on structuring and testing new software, supporting improved decision making and minimising the risk of human error.
Dr Mark Bentall, Chief Technology Officer of EADS Defence and Communications Systems says: “The Erudine Behaviour Engine offers EADS huge potential in reducing the overall development, integration and support costs of complex systems. The tool enables our engineers to discover new applications and benefits for our customers, which in turn allows EADS to consider new and more innovative solutions for the future. We will be using the software across our European operations to maximise capability for our customers.”
Martin Rice, Chief Executive Officer of Erudine, says: “We look forward to pushing the technological boundaries in the defence and security sectors still further through our new partnership with EADS. Erudine is ideally suited to team with EADS in the area of innovative technology solutions, both as a company and as a vendor of a software development toolkit that delivers genuine, demonstrable competitive advantage.”
EADS and Erudine have successfully undertaken various market testing activities to demonstrate the potential of the innovative technology.
EADS Defence and Communications Systems (DCS), the “Systems House” of EADS, is an integrated unit of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS).
DS is a system solutions provider. It combines military air systems, missile systems, communications and intelligence systems, global security solutions as well as sensor and avionics systems into a single effective network. With 2005 revenues of €5.6 billion, the Division employs 23,000.
EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2005, EADS generated revenues of €34.2 billion and employed a workforce of about 113,000.

Notes for editors:
Erudine’s software also offers a solution to the evolution and integration of existing systems that have become inflexible and not well understood but remain business critical: ’legacy IT systems’ are seen as one of the single biggest obstacles to business transformation today.
Erudine displayed a next-generation ’battlefield situational awareness and decision-support’ system at DSEi in 2005. Here, the software was used to network multiple streams of information and data from disparate sources to provide a single, concise view of the battle space. Drawing on case-based scenarios the system highlights conflicts or inappropriate behaviour before actions are taken, supporting more effective decision making by military commanders and minimising risk or possible loss of human life.
The Erudine Behaviour Engine is software that allows developers to build the behaviour of a new enterprise system or clone the behaviour of a legacy system with speed and ease. The systems built using the Erudine Behaviour Engine cannot become legacy instead they remain agile and behaviour can be modified and added safely.
